One of the major healthcare providers in the U.S. state of Maine accidentally sent notifications stating that 500 living people had died.

The messages reached 531 patients, informing them that they had passed away, along with instructions for their next of kin.

Officials explained that the cause was a software malfunction.

The provider confirmed that it regrets the error, that the patients were not listed as deceased in their medical records, and that their health status was unaffected.
