American divorce lawyer reveals the strangest clauses in prenuptial agreements

- Alimony cut for weight gain and banning a certain beard were among the oddest clauses, according to the lawyer
- Many clauses are difficult to enforce legally
American divorce lawyer James Sexton revealed some of the most bizarre and shocking clauses he has encountered in prenuptial agreements, stressing that these documents are important to avoid future disputes and make asset division less complicated
Sexton, who runs a law firm in New York and has over 20 years of experience in family law, explained that prenuptial agreements are contracts that set the financial and other rules between spouses before marriage, adding that ignoring them is a big risk
The lawyer highlighted some of the strange clauses he has seen during his career, such as a provision that the wife would lose $10,000 in alimony for every 10-pound weight gain during the marriage, and another that forbids the husband from growing a certain type of beard
Despite the oddity of these clauses, Sexton confirmed that many are legally difficult to enforce, but they reflect couples’ desire to protect themselves or set rules they consider fair before starting married life
Sexton said: Marriage is love, and divorce is business
