Mohamed Sami Acquitted of Defamation Charges Following Dispute with Afaf Shaib

The Economic Court in Cairo hasruled to dismiss the lawsuit filed by actress Afaf Shaib against director Mohamed Sami, in which she sought financial compensation of 5 million Egyptian pounds, in case number 8402 of 2024.
Shaban Said, Sami’s legal representative, stated that the ruling issued by the Eighth Circuit of the Economic Court is final, confirming the complete dismissal of the case.
The dispute between the two parties began after statements made by Sami during a TV program, which Shaib considered offensive, prompting her to file a defamation lawsuit against him. In her claim, the actress cited several remarks she deemed insulting, including: "Everything you said is lies upon lies," "She didn’t go to the hospital," and "A lying woman."
It is worth noting that the October Appellate Misdemeanor Court previously acquitted Mohamed Sami of the accusations against him, confirming that his statements did not meet the elements of a defamation offense.
The court clarified that Sami’s remarks were made in response to earlier accusations by the actress herself and were not intended to insult or defame her, but were part of defending himself and clarifying his position to the public.
"What she said about me is false" The court added that upon reviewing the video submitted by the actress’s defense, it was evident that the director did not make any direct statements that would harm Shaib’s reputation. He emphasized his respect for her, saying: "Afaf Shaib is a great lady, and I would be ill-mannered if I overstepped with a great lady, and what she said about me is lies and did not happen." Accordingly, the court ruled that these statements fall within the scope of lawful self-defense and do not constitute any defamation or slander offense under the law.
