Enrique Sets an Example with Barcelona and Threatens Bayern Munich in the Champions League
Luis Enrique

In statements reported by the French newspaper L’Equipe, Luis Enrique confirmed that Paris Saint-Germain’s focus has fully shifted to their upcoming European clash, recalling his last victory over his former team, Barcelona.

The Parc des Princes will host the high-voltage match on Tuesday evening as part of the fourth round of the 2025-2026 Champions League group stage. PSG enters the game in high spirits, following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Nice in Ligue 1, courtesy of a last-minute goal by Portuguese striker Gonçalo Ramos in the 95th minute. This goal not only secured three crucial points but also kept PSG at the top of the table after eleven rounds, while preventing a fourth draw in the last five league games.

“Just like Barcelona” Enrique told L’Equipe: "We have already begun focusing on the next match against Bayern Munich, as it is, just like the Barcelona game, one of the best matches where we can perform at our highest level."

The former Spain national team coach added: "Bayern have won their last 15 matches, which is an excellent record. We are excited to face one of the best teams in Europe, and we are confident. We are fully aware of the electric atmosphere our fans will create at the Parc des Princes, and we will try to make the most of it."

Denying Complacency Enrique addressed accusations that PSG lost focus in domestic competitions following their historic Champions League triumph last season. He responded firmly: "No… but the media likes to jump to conclusions, whether positive or negative, even though we are still at the start of the season." He added: "It’s great to have strong competition among several teams, but this is not the time to draw conclusions. We need to manage the different competitions we are involved in, and I believe we are in good shape."

He also praised the mentality of his team and fans, as shown in the recent win over Nice: "I can assure you that we share the same mindset as our fans, who continued supporting the team and cheering for 94 minutes until we scored the winning goal. Not giving up is crucial to strengthening our character on the field."

Praise for the Stars: Dembélé and Ramos Enrique singled out attackers Ousmane Dembélé and Gonçalo Ramos for special praise. About Dembélé, he said: "Ousmane is a player of a different class; watching him is enjoyable, even for just 10 or 20 minutes. We are happy with his progress and have no concerns about his condition." On Ramos, who scored the winning goal against Nice, he commented: "Gonçalo Ramos is very important for us because he is ready for every match, whether he starts or not. Even five minutes of his participation means five minutes of hard work and quality. Scoring the winner against Nice was important for him and the team."

A “Champions” Season: Continental Perfection, Domestic Stumbles PSG have had a contrasting season so far. On the continental level, they remain perfect in four Champions League games, having started the season by winning the UEFA Super Cup against Tottenham Hotspur (on penalties after a 2-2 draw).

In the Champions League title defense, PSG achieved three commanding victories:

  • Defeated Atalanta 4-0 in Paris
  • Beat Barcelona 2-1 at Montjuïc
  • Crushed Bayer Leverkusen 7-2 in Germany

Domestically in Ligue 1, the picture is less sparkling. After eleven rounds, PSG has seven wins, three draws, and one loss:

Wins: Nantes (1-0), Angers (1-0), Toulouse (6-3), Lens (2-0), Auxerre (2-0), Brest, Nice (1-0) Draws: Lille (1-1), Strasbourg (3-3), Lorient Loss: A painful 0-1 defeat to rivals Olympique Marseille in the "Clasico," a match held concurrently with the Ballon d’Or ceremony, which had been postponed 24 hours due to bad weather
