Meta announces the permanent shutdown of Messenger app on Windows and Mac

Meta, the owner of Facebook and WhatsApp, has officially announced its decision to discontinue support for the Messenger desktop app on both Mac and Windows systems.
This decision is set to take effect permanently on December 15, 2025.
The company confirmed that users will no longer be able to log in to the standalone desktop app after this date, a move aimed at unifying the user experience and focusing on web-based platforms.
Closure Details and Available Alternatives
Meta has already started sending alert notifications to desktop users, giving them a 60-day transition period before the app is fully discontinued.
Once the deadline arrives, users will be completely blocked from using the desktop app, and the company recommends deleting it as it will no longer function.
Users wishing to access their Messenger conversations on a computer will be redirected to the web version via Facebook.com or Messenger.com.
This decision comes roughly a year after Meta replaced the original Messenger app with a Progressive Web App (PWA) in September 2024, a move seen by observers as an attempt to simplify the messaging infrastructure while focusing on WhatsApp for desktop, which will continue to operate without changes.
