This 80-Year-Old Woman Almost Made It to the Miss Universe Pageant!

In an unusual scene that captured global attention at the end of last year, 80-year-old South Korean woman Chi Sun-hwa stole the spotlight after reaching the final stage of the Miss Korea pageant, becoming the oldest contestant in the competition’s history and one of the most inspiring participants worldwide.

Chi, a grandmother of three who is preparing to celebrate her 81st birthday next month, never imagined standing on a stage representing Korean beauty. However, recent rule changes in the pageant made that possible.

Previously, contestants were required to be between 18 and 28 years old, but the Miss Universe Organization lifted that restriction last year, also allowing married women, mothers, and even pregnant women to participate — opening the door for inclusivity and diversity.

With a calm smile, the grandmother said, “When I heard about the removal of the age limit, I told myself, why not give it a try? Even if I don’t win, it’s enough to have such an opportunity. Beauty isn’t just about appearance — it comes from peace of mind and respect for others.”

A Fashion Model at 72!

Although it was her first time entering a beauty pageant, Chi is no stranger to the fashion world. She has worked for years as a model for major Korean brands, appearing in prestigious magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar and Elle, and featuring in various local advertising campaigns.

Her journey into the spotlight began at the age of 72, when she was working as a nurse in a hospital. A patient once suggested she try modeling. “I laughed at first — I thought it was a joke,” Chi recalls, “but her words awakened an old dream. I had loved fashion since I was young, and I thought, why not make that dream come true now?”

She later took runway training classes and practiced walking during her work breaks until, at age 74, she made her debut at Seoul Fashion Week, marking the start of a new chapter in her life.

In an interview with CNN, Chi said, “Modeling opened a door I never imagined. I told myself I would work hard and prove that age is no barrier to ambition. I’m grateful to God for this opportunity, and I’m still enjoying every moment.”

At the Miss Korea 2024 finals, held on September 30, Chi did not win the title or the chance to represent South Korea at the global pageant in Mexico, but she left the stage with her head held high — having competed against women fifty years younger and proving that true beauty is not measured by age, but by presence and courage.
