Argentine star Lionel Messi is facing an official investigation by Spanish authorities regarding a luxury villa he owns on the island of Ibiza, amid suspicions of construction violations within a protected natural area.

According to media reports, the case concerns a villa Messi purchased in 2022 for approximately 11 million euros. Spanish newspapers, including A Bola, reported that parts of the villa were built illegally, including unauthorized additions such as an underground garage and several rooms in the basement.

Spanish authorities stated that these violations led to the refusal to grant a habitation certificate and triggered legal proceedings for violating urban planning laws.

Demolition of unauthorized sections

If the violations are confirmed, Messi may be required to demolish the unauthorized sections to regularize the property, or authorities could enforce administrative demolition in case of non-compliance. Sources close to the player confirmed that the illegal work had been carried out by the previous owner before the villa was sold, and that Messi and his lawyer were unaware of any violations at the time of purchase.

This case comes amid stricter scrutiny by Ibiza authorities over luxury construction projects in protected natural areas, following growing criticism of the so-called “celebrity land grab” on the island.

Accusations of “environmental damage”

It is worth noting that Messi’s home on the island was previously vandalized in 2024 by environmental activists, who accused him of contributing to environmental destruction and turning the island into an exclusive investment project for the wealthy.
