The announcement of Egyptian actress Mai Omar’s salary for her new drama series “Ghasel w Makwa”, set to air in Ramadan 2026, has sparked widespread debate on social media.

According to some circulating reports, Mai Omar will be the highest-paid actress of the season, with her fee estimated at 50 million Egyptian pounds, equivalent to over one million US dollars.

Meanwhile, Mai Omar’s media office issued a statement on Thursday, confirming that she has become the highest-paid actress in television drama after signing the lead role contract for the 15-episode series “Ghasel w Makwa”. The statement noted that this comes following her success in the series “Esh Esh” and “Ne’mat El Avokato” during the previous Ramadan seasons.

The series is produced by a non-Egyptian production company, the same one that collaborated with Mai Omar on “Esh Esh”, with the promotion of her salary taking precedence over highlighting the artistic content of the show.

This announcement has also revived the old debate over actor Mohamed Ramadan’s previously reported status as the highest-paid performer, which had prompted calls from some media voices at the time to regulate salaries in the drama industry.
