Brazilian authorities have arrested a 59-year-old woman named Isabel Cardoso de Andrade after she was accused of poisoning her two granddaughters with a cake she prepared during a family visit, resulting in the death of one of the children.

The incident occurred when the grandmother’s husband returned home with an extra cake and some cheese bread as a snack for the children. After eating the cake, both girls fell seriously ill; nine-year-old Alana dos Santos Cardoso Marques suffered severe vomiting and stomach pain, while her 11-year-old sister, who had eaten a smaller portion, showed milder symptoms.

Even the family cat displayed similar symptoms after licking part of the cake and later died, raising further suspicion about the incident.

Alana was taken to the hospital, according to Mirror, after neighbors noticed a white discharge from her nose. She passed away shortly after arriving due to cardiac and respiratory arrest.

Investigations revealed traces of terbufos, a toxic pesticide, in the remains of the cake and in the body of the deceased child.

Terbufos affects the nervous system, causing severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing, convulsions, and seizures, which can lead to death, highlighting the extreme danger of the incident.
