Angelina Jolie defends freedom of expression in the United States Angelina Jolie: "We are going through extremely challenging times"

Hollywood star Angelina Jolie, 50, surprised audiences during the promotion of her new film Couture at the San Sebastián Film Festival in Spain on September 21, by stating that she does not currently "recognize" the United States.

Jolie defended freedom of expression, emphasizing that any attempt to restrict individual freedoms poses a serious danger. She said: "I believe that anything, anywhere, that divides or limits personal expressions and freedoms is extremely dangerous." She added, "I do not currently recognize my country. I have always lived internationally. My family is international, and my life and worldview are equal and unified."

"Extremely challenging times"

The actress also touched on the tense political climate in the United States, describing the current period as "extremely challenging," and warned of the need to exercise caution when expressing opinions, even at press conferences. Her remarks come days after Jimmy Kimmel Live! was suspended indefinitely following Jimmy Kimmel's comments regarding Charlie Kirk.

Jolie has always been outspoken on political and international issues, sparking widespread debate on social media, with some followers expressing support while others criticized her.

She served as the UNHCR Special Envoy between 2012 and 2022, after working with the organization since 2001, and hinted at her interest in political engagement, affirming her ability to make a positive impact without party affiliation or holding official positions.

She also criticized the policies of former U.S. President Donald Trump, writing in The New York Times: "We must never allow our values to become collateral damage in the pursuit of greater security. Closing our doors to refugees or discriminating against them is not our approach, and it will not make us safer."
