Organizers of the Flanders Festival Ghent in Belgium announced on Wednesday the cancellation of a scheduled concert by the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra on September 18, citing the identity of its incoming chief conductor, Israeli musician Lahav Shani—a move that sparked angry reactions in Germany.

Shani, who is set to officially take over the Munich Philharmonic in the 2026/2027 season, currently serves as the music director of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.

Reasons for Cancellation

Festival organizers explained that they could not provide a “sufficient clarification” regarding Shani’s stance on the policies of the Israeli government, which faces widespread international criticism over its ongoing war in Gaza. Their statement read:

“We have chosen to refrain from cooperating with partners who have not clearly and unequivocally distanced themselves from that regime.”

They added that Shani had on several occasions spoken in favor of “peace and reconciliation,” but noted that the “current situation triggers emotional reactions,” stressing their aim to preserve a calm atmosphere at the festival.

German and Belgian Criticism

The decision drew official backlash in Germany, where Culture Minister Wolfram Weimer condemned it as a “disgrace for Europe,” adding:

“Under the guise of so-called criticism of Israel, what is happening here is a cultural boycott.”

Meanwhile, Belgian Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib said the cancellation was an “overreaction,” emphasizing in remarks to local radio the importance of “not conflating the Jewish community, Israelis, and the policies of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.”

Political Context

The controversy comes amid growing sensitivity around cultural ties with Israel. Germany remains one of Israel’s strongest allies internationally, even as criticism has mounted in Berlin over the country’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza.
