Najwa Karam talks about her late father and the timing of her retirement

Lebanese star Najwa Karam revealed the complexities of her relationship with her late father, noting that it was full of challenges and disagreements, particularly regarding singing and love. She explained that her father opposed her entering the world of music and forbade her from emotional relationships, even when she fell in love.
In her interview with media host Mohammed Qais on Al-Mashhad channel, Karam shared emotional details from behind the scenes of recording her song “W Kberna.” She recalled how she suddenly stopped singing when she saw her father in the control room, emphasizing that their relationship was tense at the time because of her marriage, even though she was not a minor. She added that her father was loving and caring, but strongly influenced by a rigid patriarchal culture that made him inflexible in his decisions. Eventually, the song became his favorite after the two reconciled.
Longing and Nostalgia
Najwa Karam spoke with deep emotion about her late father, saying: “His presence in the house made everything tremble with fear.” She explained that despite her strength as a woman and an artist, she still feels a constant need for the sense of safety given by a man, whether it be her father or brother.
Marriage and the Search for Stability
Karam confirmed that she found in her current husband the qualities she had long been searching for—qualities resembling her father’s at their core. She noted that marriage brought her greater stability and self-confidence, adding that most women choose life partners who resemble their fathers in temperament and the sense of security they provide.
Love for Lebanon and Early Beginnings
Speaking about her early days, Karam said she grew up loving Lebanon and the Lebanese Army, adding that her first experience with church hymns and chants was not the start of a professional career but just a phase. Her real artistic breakthrough came with the song “Heihat Ya Abu El-Zulf,” which allowed her to discover her own unique musical style.
She also highlighted the major challenges she faced from certain production companies that tried to promote other voices over hers, but she was able to prove herself and secure her place as one of Lebanon’s leading voices.
When Will She Retire?
On the subject of retirement, Karam stated that she knows exactly when the time will come: “I will stop singing when I feel I have nothing new to offer or when the audience loses interest in me. I know very well how to leave the stage with respect.”
A New Album in the Works
Najwa Karam concluded by announcing that she has already started working on her new album, currently choosing lyrics and compositions, with plans to fully begin production during the winter season, which she considers the ideal time for creativity.
