Bassem Yakhour Issues Public Apology to Syrians, Denies Being Part of Former Regime

In a rare and emotional appearance during a televised interview, Syrian actor Bassem Yakhour publicly apologized to Syrians who felt hurt or disappointed by his past political statements. He said: "To anyone who was hurt or affected by my words, I offer a heartfelt apology...
I am truly sorry," in a gesture many described as courageous and deeply sincere. Although Yakhour was previously perceived as a supporter of the Syrian regime, he stressed that he was never officially affiliated with it, nor did he hold any position or benefit from any business relationship with the government. He clarified that his previous comments were personal opinions, not evidence of involvement in or support for the regime's actions.
He also stated that claims about him receiving special privileges were merely rumors spread by opponents after he took legal action against them. He added: "I do not see myself as part of the former regime. I never held an official role, and everything I have comes purely from my work
" He further explained that his limited interaction with Maher al-Assad was purely personal and humanitarian, not a means of influence or intimidation, but to help certain individuals in need. Yakhour’s remarks triggered a wide reaction on social media.
Some praised his honesty and saw the apology as a first step toward reconciliation, while others criticized it as too late and insufficient, demanding a clearer apology for past accusations he had made against protestors. He concluded by expressing how his recent visit to Damascus was a chance to reconnect with people directly:
"It was important for me to meet people face-to-face on the ground, not just through a screen," reflecting his emotional response to the warmth he felt from the public after years of absence.
