After appealing his prison sentence, Nishan awaits a fateful decision

The Cairo Economic Appeals Court has decided to reopen the case between Lebanese TV presenter Nishan Artin and Egyptian media personality Yasmine Ezz, with a new session scheduled for the end of June. The decision comes after Nishan’s legal team filed an appeal against a prior ruling that sentenced him to one month in prison, with bail set at EGP 5,000 and an additional fine of EGP 50,000, on charges of insult and defamation.
Three Possible Legal Outcomes
Nishan now faces three possible legal outcomes: the initial ruling may be upheld, the sentence could be reduced, or the judgment could be overturned entirely, resulting in his acquittal.
"Offensive Remarks"
Yasmine Ezz’s legal team submitted evidence to the court claiming that Nishan deliberately used offensive language targeting her character and reputation on social media platforms—evidence the court found sufficient to establish the act of defamation and insult.
The dispute dates back to September 2023, during a panel discussion at the Arab Media Forum. Ezz arrived late to the session, prompting Nishan to comment, “She’s probably busy warming up her winter voice,” a remark she viewed as public mockery. She later filed a formal complaint, which evolved into a full legal case.
