Sawsan Arsheed: "I thought about separating from Maxim Khalil"

Despite being married for over 21 years, Syrian actress Sawsan Arshid did not hide that she had seriously considered divorcing her husband, actor Maxime Khalil, particularly during a difficult period when they moved to live in Lebanon.
Speaking on a TV program, Arshid described that phase as emotionally and psychologically challenging. She faced a new reality in a place where she knew no one, while Maxime had his work and connections there. Meanwhile, she bore the responsibility of caring for their two children, Hani and Jad.
She revealed that the pressures of daily life and recurring disagreements made her think about ending the relationship, but the presence of the children made the decision difficult. This pushed her to hold onto the marriage, but with a more mature and understanding approach.
"Love Changes… It Becomes Part of Life"
Discussing the secret behind the longevity and success of her marriage to Khalil, Arshid explained that love evolves over time. In the beginning, passion and the desire to build a family are the driving forces, but later on, love turns into shared responsibilities and commitments, becoming part of everyday life. She added, “We live an unconditional love that is not based on possession or dependency.”
An Unconventional Meeting and a Quick Marriage
Arshid recalled how she first met Maxime Khalil on the set of the series “Maraya”, where he was eager to get to know her, while she initially rejected the idea. However, they got married just four months after meeting.
A Past Marriage and Teenage Curiosity
In another part of the interview, Arshid spoke about her first marriage to actor Ghazwan Al-Safadi, which was driven by teenage curiosity and admiration for his personality during their studies at the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts. Her family did not approve of her having a man in her life without a formal relationship, which encouraged her to marry him. They divorced after three years.
Her Relationship with Her Stepson
She also expressed pride in the strong bond she shares with Hani, Maxime Khalil’s son from a previous marriage, emphasizing that she felt a deep maternal instinct toward him since he lived with them, and their relationship is built on affection and understanding.
Views on Intimate Scenes and the Acting Industry
Sawsan Arshid rejected performing intimate scenes in drama, stating that Arab society is not yet ready to accept such scenes. This was in response to the controversy surrounding a scene in which Maxime Khalil pushes actress Sulafa Memar in the series "Takht Sharqi".
In another context, Arshid said she does not intend to apologize to actress Amal Arafa after criticizing her for a scene in the series “Contact”. She stressed that no actor should perform under coercion, and that it is better to withdraw from a project rather than perform a scene that goes against one’s convictions. She added that Amal should have rejected the script instead of going along with it.
