At the conclusion of a legal battle that captured widespread attention in the artistic community, the Egyptian Court of Appeals has officially closed the case between director Mohamed Sami and actress Afaf Shoaib, declaring Sami innocent of the defamation and slander charges brought against him.

Court Overturns Ruling Against Mohamed Sami

The October Appeals Court ruled in favor of Mohamed Sami's appeal, overturning a previous verdict that had fined him 5,000 EGP, and issued a full acquittal of the accusations filed by Afaf Shoaib.

The case stemmed from comments made by Sami during an appearance on a television program, which Shoaib considered offensive. She subsequently took legal action and filed a lawsuit against him.

Initial Ruling and Successful Appeal

The lower court had initially ruled to fine Sami, but his legal team filed an appeal, which was reviewed by the higher court and ultimately led to his acquittal. The case sparked considerable public debate and division, particularly given the high profile of both parties and the sensitive nature of the allegations. The court’s final decision has now brought the matter to a close.

Separately, director Mohamed Sami took part in a panel discussion at the Arab Media Summit recently held in the UAE. He spoke about his temporary break from television work, explaining that stepping back after major successes does not signify retreat, but rather serves as a necessary opportunity for reflection and creative renewal.

“Every creative person needs moments of pause and contemplation,” Sami said. “Constant success without evaluation limits innovation. The relentless pace of work doesn’t give us time to reflect on what truly brings us satisfaction or joy.”

The Egyptian director hinted at a return to the screen with new projects, following a hiatus he described as a chance to recharge and come back with more mature and unique content.
