The Martyred Photojournalist Fatima Hassouna

Cannes Film Festival Remembers the Brilliance of Fatima Hassouna Juliette Binoche: "Fatima should have been with us tonight"

Her name was present despite her absence; her image shone at the Cannes Film Festival, and her spirit revived the place with resilience and struggle, as her messages to the world were remembered through her camera—damaged by the Israeli entity.

Palestinian photojournalist Fatima Hassouna, who was martyred in an airstrike in Gaza in mid-April, had a presence at the festival. Juliette Binoche, the French actress and president of the Cannes jury, paid tribute to her spirit—radiating resistance—during the opening ceremony of the event.

Juliette said at the opening of the 78th edition of the festival:"Fatima should have been with us tonight. Art remains; it is a powerful testimony of our lives and dreams."

In an open letter published on Tuesday, nearly 400 figures from the global film industry—including Pedro Almodóvar and Richard Gere—called for breaking the "silence" in the face of the "genocide" in Gaza. They also praised Fatima Hassouna, who is the subject of a documentary being screened in a parallel section at Cannes.

Juliette Binoche also declared:"War, poverty, climate change, misogyny, and the demons of our barbarity do not allow us any rest."Speaking to a distinguished audience that included Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio, she added:"In the face of this massive storm, we must push forward to highlight kindness, transform our visions, heal our ignorance, abandon our fears and selfishness, and change our course."

Fatima Hassouna is part of Gaza’s deep pain.A young woman in the spring of her life—only 25 years old—was betrayed by an autumn that stole her youthful energy and achievements. She is the protagonist of the documentary "Put Your Soul in Your Palm and Walk", scheduled to be screened in May under the Association for the Distribution of Independent Cinema (ACID) program at Cannes.

Medical sources in Gaza reported that Fatima Hassouna and nine of her relatives were killed when their home in northern Gaza was hit by an airstrike in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The documentary "Put Your Soul in Your Palm and Walk" portrays Gaza’s suffering. Today, it stands as a testament to a martyr who helped create it.

The supporting association, ACID, stated:"It must be shown in every cinema... in honor of Fatima."Through her lens, she captured pain and all that causes pain, crafting a visual message scented with patriotism—elevating what she conveyed through her noble perspective.
