As the countdown begins for the 78th edition of the Cannes International Film Festival, scheduled from May 14 to 24, organizers have announced new rules governing celebrity appearances on the red carpet—aiming to reinforce elegance and order at one of the world’s most prestigious cinematic events.

According to an official statement published on the festival’s website and social media platforms, "inappropriate appearances" will be strictly prohibited, whether on the red carpet or in any area of the festival. The statement further clarified that oversized garments, particularly long dresses that obstruct movement or disrupt seating in the halls, will not be allowed this year.

Reception teams will be authorized to deny entry to anyone who fails to comply with these regulations, in a clear effort to maintain discipline and class throughout the event.

This move follows a series of awkward incidents that occurred during last year’s red carpet events—most notably one involving Dominican actress Massiel Taveras, whose arrival in a luxurious gown with an extended train caused congestion and prompted security to urge her to move quickly, leading to a tense and chaotic scene in front of the cameras.

Controversial looks

In contrast to the bold fashion choices seen at the 2024 edition—such as Bella Hadid’s sheer sand-toned Saint Laurent gown or photographer Nadia Lee Cohen’s daring look from the same label—the 2025 festival is expected to mark a shift toward more modest and refined attire.

Celebrities like Natasha Poly, Irina Shayk, and Heidi Klum, known for wearing eye-catching, sheer, or figure-hugging outfits, will likely have to rethink their wardrobe choices this year. The newly announced dress code will effectively eliminate such styles from the red carpet, giving Cannes 2025 a more elegant and conservative aesthetic.
