The Syrian Artists Syndicate has rejected the decision to withdraw confidence from its chairman, Mazen Al-Natour, labeling it as “invalid” and lacking any legal basis.
According to a statement issued by the Syndicate following the session held on Sunday—which ended with Al-Natour's dismissal and the appointment of artist Nour Mhanna as acting chairman—the decision contradicts the legal framework governing the union’s operations.
The statement, signed in Al-Natour’s name, asserted that the vote of no confidence violates Law No. 40 of 2019, which regulates the work of the Syndicate, in addition to breaching the organization’s internal regulations.
The Syndicate emphasized that the only authority legally empowered to terminate the chairman’s appointment is the one that issued it in the first place: the Prime Ministry. It clarified that Al-Natour was officially appointed through Cabinet Resolution No. 209, dated March 25, 2025, based on Article 51 of the same law.
"Extraordinary Session"
The Syndicate described the session held on May 4, 2025—during which the vote of no confidence was passed—as an extraordinary session convened and executed unlawfully, thereby undermining the legitimacy of any resulting decisions.
Two Decisions Nullified
In light of this information, the Syrian Artists Syndicate declared that both Decision No. 111/Q, regarding the withdrawal of confidence from the chairman, and Decision No. 112/Q, appointing artist Nour Mhanna as acting chairman, are null and void and have no legal effect.
The Syndicate reaffirmed its commitment to legal and institutional processes, stressing that any action related to the chairman’s position must follow official channels and legal frameworks, not exceptional or unilateral decisions.
Union Council Withdraws Confidence from Al-Natour
The Syndicate’s council had withdrawn confidence from chairman Mazen Al-Natour, accusing him of unilateral decision-making and legal violations. The move was formalized by deputy chairman Nour Mhanna following widespread controversy stirred by Al-Natour’s recent actions, including expelling actress Sulaf Fawakherji and granting honorary membership to singers Fadel Shaker and Asala Nasri.
