According to the details, the government has completed the economic feasibility study for the project of constructing and operating a light rail line connecting the two cities. It has also finalized detailed designs and topographic survey works for the phosphate line as part of a railway project linking the industrial port in Aqaba with mining areas.

The light rail project includes rehabilitating the Hijaz Railway line for the light rail between Amman and Zarqa, in addition to extending the line from northern Zarqa towards the airport, with a total length of 60 km and an expected operating speed of 60 km/h. The government estimated the project cost at around one billion dinars.

Cost estimation The government had previously announced the same estimated cost for the project within its executive program for 2026–2029, confirming its inclusion in transport sector development plans.

The project falls under the transport sector aimed at modernizing the public transport system and integrating it with other transport networks, according to government documents reported by Al Mamlaka.

For his part, Minister of Transport Nidal Qatamin previously confirmed that the light rail project is one of the strategic projects for developing public transport in the Kingdom, noting that it will improve services for citizens, reduce traffic congestion between Amman and Zarqa, and have economic and urban impacts along its route.
