In the aftermath of the shocking incident that took place in Alexandria, where a blogger ended her life by falling from the 13th floor, Egypt’s official and legislative institutions moved swiftly and notably in an attempt to contain the humanitarian and psychological repercussions of the tragedy, while opening a broad discussion on the importance of mental health support.

The tragic incident was not merely an isolated event, but rather revealed the severe psychological suffering the deceased endured in her final days, before leaving behind two daughters facing the trauma of loss at a young age—raising widespread societal concern about their condition and future.

Urgent humanitarian response to protect the two childrenIn an immediate response, the head of the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood, Dr. Sahar El-Sonbaty, directed the Child Helpline to follow up on the girls’ condition and provide all forms of psychological and social support to help ease the impact of the trauma.

The council confirmed that the two girls are currently under the care of their maternal grandmother, with ongoing coordination with the Public Prosecution to ensure a safe and stable environment away from the repercussions of the incident. It also urged social media users to refrain from sharing any images or videos related to the case, in order to preserve the dignity of the victim and protect the children’s psychological well-being.

Parliamentary calls for comprehensive actionAt the legislative level, calls intensified for swift and practical measures to strengthen the mental health support system. MP Sahar El-Bazzar proposed establishing a unified 24/7 hotline dedicated to psychological emergencies, staffed by specialists to provide immediate support.

She also called for linking this system with all relevant state entities to ensure free and urgent treatment for critical cases, in coordination with the Ministries of Social Solidarity and Manpower, as well as civil society organizations, to address the social dimensions of psychological crises.

In the same context, MP Nashwa Aql stressed the importance of adhering to professional media standards when covering such incidents, warning that irresponsible reporting could encourage imitation, while MP Ahmed El-Hammamsy called for waiting for official investigation results to fully uncover the circumstances and safeguard the rights of the children.

Strict measures to control publicationMeanwhile, the Supreme Council for Media Regulation issued firm decisions obligating all media outlets not to publish any footage related to the incident or disclose the identity of the deceased, in line with ethical standards and respect for the sanctity of the dead.

Coordination was also made with the National Telecom Regulatory Authority to take urgent technical measures to remove circulated videos from social media platforms, aiming to limit their spread and protect public privacy.
