In an incident that shook social media platforms and brought back to the spotlight one of the most mysterious crimes in Libya, Libyan security authorities managed to uncover the mystery of a horrific murder dating back to 2014, in which a 17-year-old boy was killed, after more than 12 years of concealment and family silence.

According to what was announced by the Criminal Investigation Department in the Green Mountain region, security authorities revealed the details of the crime that had remained hidden for years due to a family cover-up that prevented justice from reaching the perpetrator.

He killed his nephew and buried the body on the family’s farm

Investigations showed that the perpetrator, the victim’s uncle and a man with a criminal record, opened fire on his nephew in 2014, killing him instantly after he was shot twice in the face and chest.

After committing the crime, the suspect wrapped the body and buried it inside a family-owned farm near an old house, then concealed the burial site with stones and later set the place on fire more than once in an attempt to erase the traces of the crime.

Family silence under threat

Investigations revealed that the victim’s grandfather and one of his uncles had known about what happened for years, but fear of the perpetrator’s threats prevented them from reporting the crime to the authorities.

Another uncle also admitted that the killer told him the details of the crime in 2018, yet he refrained from informing the competent authorities.

Remains found after a three-day excavation

After an intensive search and excavation operation that lasted three days at the burial site, whose features had changed due to natural factors, specialized teams managed to recover the victim’s remains, which were officially secured and referred to forensic medicine.

Shocking confessions by the perpetrator

During the investigation, the suspect fully confessed to committing the crime, stating that he was under the influence of prohibited substances at the time.

He also admitted that he had previously kidnapped, detained, and repeatedly assaulted his nephew before ultimately ending his life.

He further confessed to involvement in illegal activities related to the promotion and circulation of prohibited materials, in addition to having previous court rulings issued against him in absentia.

Following the disclosure of its details, the case sparked widespread discussion on social media, amid deep shock among Libyans over the brutality of the crime and the long years of silence surrounding it.
