Investigations revealed that the child was hospitalized multiple times "The child took a medication that was not prescribed to him"

A court in the state of Nevada, USA, sentenced a young mother after it was proven that she administered medications not intended for her infant, causing repeated health crises that nearly endangered his life.

A statement from the Washoe County Police Department explained that the Second Judicial District Court sentenced 25-year-old Alicia Marie Martin to up to 10 years in the state prison, with the possibility of parole after serving four years.

The sentence came after Martin pleaded guilty to the charge of "poisoning or adulterating food, water, or medicine intentionally," a felony under Nevada law, according to People magazine.

The case details began after police received reports about a 14-month-old infant who experienced repeated and unexplained medical emergencies. Investigations revealed that the child was hospitalized multiple times in Nevada and Utah, raising suspicions of possible intentional poisoning.

Specialized toxicology tests showed that the child had ingested a medication that was not prescribed for him. Investigations confirmed that the source of the medication was within the home, and the mother had deliberately administered it on multiple occasions, even while he was in the hospital.

During the investigation, Martin admitted to giving her child Clonidine by crushing the pills and mixing them into his drinks and yogurt. This medication is usually used to treat high blood pressure and some symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Martin claimed that she administered the child spaced doses every few days "so as not to harm him," but medical reports revealed that the child suffered serious complications requiring urgent medical intervention, with his life being near death on multiple occasions.

Following the incident, authorities arrested the mother and filed multiple criminal charges, including child abuse and neglect, in addition to intentional poisoning, culminating in the court issuing a ten-year prison sentence against her.
