Authorities in the U.S. state of Wyoming have filed first-degree murder and child abuse charges against a 35-year-old mother after she killed her 11-month-old son during a custody dispute.

Reports indicated that Madeline Daly fled with the child after a court awarded custody to his father, Jake Stoner.

The child, Basil Stoner, was reported missing on November 19, prompting a large-scale search that ended in New Mexico.

According to a statement from the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, police found Daly inside a moving RV and attempted to negotiate her surrender, but she refused to exit, prompting a SWAT response.

Before officers intervened, gunfire was heard, and Daly was found holding a handgun while her son suffered a fatal gunshot wound.

Despite life-saving efforts, the child died before reaching the hospital.

Court documents indicated that Daly confessed to killing her son and told officers that she had not acted quickly enough to end her own life before being arrested.

She also reportedly stated that she refused to let the father have Basil and claimed, without evidence, that the child would have been in danger with his father, who “never wanted any financial, physical, or emotional relationship with Basil.”
