A 13-year-old British boy was killed after being stabbed in his home in Portugal, with authorities suspecting that the perpetrator was his mother’s former partner.
The boy was locally identified as Alfie Hallit, and the basketball team he played for offered condolences via social media.
Authorities reported that the alleged perpetrator, who also died, was the boy’s mother’s ex-partner. After stabbing the boy, he stabbed himself with the same knife, causing a gas leak explosion.
The incident occurred in the village of Casais in Tomar district, about 90 miles northeast of the capital Lisbon.
Police said officers from the national guard responded after receiving a report of a suspected domestic violence incident.
The boy’s mother was found showing signs of restraint and beating and was taken to the nearest hospital, according to the police statement.
The statement added: “Both the suspect and the minor suffered multiple injuries from a sharp weapon. Despite signs of life, they were pronounced dead at the scene shortly after.”
It also noted that the house emitted a strong gas smell, which shortly after caused an explosion that injured an officer.
Authorities clarified that the suspect had previously served a prison sentence for murder, and the family had been monitored following prior domestic violence reports in 2022 and 2023.
