  • Woman arrested after killing her niece
  • Admitted to killing other children

A woman was arrested on charges of killing her six-year-old niece during a wedding ceremony in Panipat, Haryana, India, after police later confirmed that she had admitted to killing three other children in separate incidents over the past two years.

Police said the suspect, named Bunam, drowned her niece in a water tank at a relative’s house in Nultha village, Israna area, according to a report by a local news channel.

According to investigations, the girl, Vidi, who lived in Sonepat, had attended the wedding with her family, and relatives noticed her disappearance after leaving with the wedding procession.

An hour into the search, the girl was found in a storage room on the first floor of a relative’s house, with her head submerged in water, and she was transported to the hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Her father filed a police report accusing Bunam of murder.

During interrogation, police said Bunam admitted that she drowned Vidi because she didn’t want her to “look more beautiful than her.”

Investigations added that the suspect targeted young girls out of jealousy.

Authorities stated that Bunam admitted to committing a pattern of similar crimes, drowning a total of four children—three girls and her own son—using water tanks or buckets in places where families gathered.

Police noted that the previous deaths were initially considered accidental, until Bunam’s confessions led to reopening the closed cases.

The case of Vidi’s murder has been registered, and investigations are ongoing.
