Father ends life of his months-old son in California

- Jake Haro sentenced to more than 30 years after pleading guilty to killing his infant son Emmanuel
- Authorities have not found the child’s remains
A court in southern California sentenced Jake Haro to more than 30 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to killing his 7-month-old son, Emmanuel.
Authorities have so far been unable to locate the child’s remains despite an investigation that lasted several months.
In August, Haro and his wife Rebecca reported that their child had been kidnapped outside a store, claiming the mother was attacked while changing his diaper.
The case drew widespread attention from the public and authorities, who launched a large search effort for Emmanuel.
The couple was arrested shortly afterward at their home in Cabazon, about 20 miles west of Palm Springs, after authorities discovered inconsistencies in their account.
Riverside County Superior Court Judge Gary Polk sentenced Haro to seven years and two months for probation violations and other charges, in addition to 25 years to life for assaulting a child under eight, to be served consecutively.
Haro was also ordered to pay $10,000 in restitution.
Rebecca Haro has pleaded not guilty and is being held on $1 million bail; she is scheduled to appear in court in January.
Prosecutors had sought a sentence of 31 years to life for Jake Haro for killing Emmanuel and a previous assault on a child in 2018.
Haro had previously pleaded guilty to child endangerment causing lasting injuries to his 10-month-old daughter and was sentenced to six years with suspension, a ruling prosecutors argued should now be applied.
Brandon Smith, assistant district attorney in Riverside County, wrote in court filings: “Jake Haro murdered seven-month-old Emmanuel, but in reality, he stands before this court having harmed two young children. If there are lesser forms of evil in this world, I am not aware of them.”
