  • The robot’s debut fall in Russia sparked widespread mockery and rapid circulation online
  • The incident highlighted the broader challenges involved in building reliable humanoid machines

Russia’s first humanoid robot was unveiled to the public at an event in Moscow, but its debut was abruptly cut short after it toppled over just seconds after stepping on stage.

A video that quickly spread across social media showed the robot, named Aldol, entering to background music before losing its balance. It lifted its right arm in what appeared to be a greeting attempt, only to wobble again moments later and fall face-first.

Technology specialist Lance Ulanoff commented that the robot “could barely walk or wave,” noting that the scene underscored Russia’s lag in robotics and AI when compared with the United States, where advanced models can walk, dance, and perform complex movements.

During the incident, two assistants rushed to lift the robot, while a black curtain was pulled across the stage to conceal the mishap.

Ulanoff said the video’s popularity was also driven by the team’s reaction, describing the moment as “bad and comical,” and adding that it serves as a reminder of how difficult robot development can be.

Reports indicated that the event was intended to showcase Russia’s progress in AI and robotics as it aims to strengthen its position in the global race for humanoid machines.

Vladimir Vitukhin, CEO of AIdol—the company behind the robot—said the fall was caused by lighting and calibration issues during the presentation.
